What is Coir Door Matting?

Coir, a remarkably tough fibre obtained from coconut husks, has become a popular choice for stylish and eco-friendly door mats for decades. These mats are known for their durability, moisture resistance, and rustic charm, making them perfect for stopping dirt and halting moisture at the threshold.
At The Natural Rug Company, we offer Cut-to-Size Coir Door Matting in 1m or 2m widths, allowing you to order up a custom fit for your entranceway and trim it to the exact size you need using a sharp blade.

How To Measure For Coir Door Matting
Existing Coir Available - Replacement
If you already have a Coir Recess Mat, no doubt you are replacing an old one, then you will have a very easy job. Lift the exisiting matting and flip it, so that the backing is face up. Use a large roll of brown paper to lay over the surface area. Cut around the existing mat to form a paper template.
Now you can flip your new Coir Doormat over so that its backing is face up, lay the paper template on top (secure with some tape) and you can cut around the paper template.
No Existing Coir Available - New Lay
If you are laying new Coir, here is a step by step guide on how to measure your coir matting:

● Carefully measure the width and length of the recess well. Take a note of the measurements and then add approx 1cm to each measurement to allow for trimming. Few recess wells are entirely symetrical, so this will give you valuable leeway.
● Measure Irregular Shapes: If your entrance has an irregular shape, create a template using cardboard or paper to ensure an exact fit.
● Always Order Extra Matting: Always order a little extra matting than your measurements indicate. This allows for any adjustments during installation and ensures a clean finish.
How To Cut Coir Matting
Now you have your measurements, unroll your Coir Matting Material and lay it on a flat surface.

You should choose a firm even surface. If you have a patio or driveway, this is ideal as it will limit the cleanup after the job is finished and, if you slip, you wont cut into a wood or carpeted floor under the Coir!
Flip your Coir so that the backing is face up. It is the backing that we wish to cut through, not the Coir Fibres themselves.
Mark out your dimensions using a pen or chalk.
Cut along this line with a large rule, straight edge or other firm straight guide.
How To Cut Coir Matting For A Bespoke Entrance
The most important point about bespoke areas is that you should consider the mirroring of measurements when the Coir is flipped back to the correct orientation after cutting. If you are measuring the left hand corner, when flipped that corner will be the right hand corner of the upturned Coir.
Here is an illustation to help guide you:

You can see in the image above that the two points are mirrored when the Coir is flipped. Keep this in mind when planning out a custom Coir matting recessed zone.
How To Trim Coir Matting

Coir PVC backing is easy to trim in place using a sharp utility knife. Once your matting arrives, place it in your entranceway and carefully run a knife along the tigher edges. Occassionally pulling back the edge can help move along the edge to slice off excess cleanly.
