Coir is only available in widths of 1m or 2m. However, we can cut down your Custom Coir Door Mat's width to a size easier to handle. Contact us after you have ordered and we can adjust your order to better suit your needs. (Example: You need 120cm x 120cm. After ordering 200cm x 120cm, email us and let us know you need this adjustment and we will cut down your Coir to 120cm width, at no addtional cost, allowing a smoother installation. For additional cuts to adjust both width and length, contact us as for a small fee, we will adjust to the exact measurements you need.)

How to Install and Cut Coir Matting

Coir matting comes with a tough PVC or latex backing that keeps it sturdy and in place — no glue required! Follow these simple steps to cut and fit your mat like a pro.

Tools You’ll Need:

Utility/Stanley knife (sharp blade)
Straight edge (metal ruler, spirit level, or straight timber)
Tape measure
Gloves (to protect your hands)
Pen or chalk pen (for marking)

Step By Step Guide

Step 1: Measure Your Space
Measure the area carefully, noting the width, length, and available clearance under your door. Choose a mat thickness that suits your floor and door gap.

Step 2: Prepare Your Surface
Make sure the floor is clean, dry, and free of debris so the mat sits flat and secure.

Step 3: Mark Your Cutting Lines
Flip the mat over and mark out your measurements on the backing. Double-check them before cutting.

Step 4: Cut to Size
Using your straight edge as a guide, cut along the lines with a sharp Stanley knife. Take your time — the backing is tough, and scissors won’t work.

Step 5: Fit the Mat
Place the mat into your mat well or recess, checking that it sits snugly and straight. If needed, lift and trim a little more for the perfect fit.

Step 6: Finishing Touches
Do not glue the mat down — its weight and fit will hold it in place, making it easy to lift for cleaning later. Brush off any loose fibres with a stiff broom, and you’re ready to go!

Give It a Regular Brush

Use a stiff brush to sweep off dirt, dust, and loose fibres that collect on the surface. A quick once-over every few days helps prevent buildup and keeps the mat effective at trapping debris.

Shake It Out

If your mat is loose-laid rather than fitted into a mat well, take it outside and give it a good shake now and then. This dislodges trapped grit and dust from deeper in the fibres. If your mat is in a well, it is still a good idea to give it a shake once a year.

Keep It Dry

While coir is moisture-resistant, it’s best to avoid letting it stay damp for long periods. If your mat gets very wet, allow it to air-dry thoroughly before putting it back in place. This will help prevent any musty smells and extend its lifespan.

Avoid Heavy Soaking or Pressure Washing

Coir matting isn’t suited to soaking or power washing, as too much water can weaken the natural fibres and backing over time. Stick to brushing and light vacuuming for the best results.

Rotate Occasionally

For loose mats, rotating them every few weeks helps spread out wear, especially in high-traffic areas. This keeps the mat looking even and prolongs its life.

Plan for Replacement

With regular care, coir mats are long-lasting, but like any natural product, they will eventually show signs of wear. Keeping an eye on thinning areas ensures you can replace your mat before it loses its effectiveness.
